or, why I decided to learn this, and what it ended up meaning to me




I don't really know why I took up learning Gothic, honestly. I make a lot of silly decisions on the spur of the moment, driven by a constant desire for novelty. When I look up the reasons I gave in posts I made upon entering those few Gothic revival servers, I described it as an inversion of why a classicist would learn latin, in something of a romantic sense-- why a 19th century philologist might have done so, I guess. One learns Latin as the language of antiquity, of the classics, of a grand past. My reasons are equally romantic, vague, and pretentious, but the aesthetic is different.
